Today we are going to know in deep Maria Bello, we are going to know her passions, her style, her projects and what she likes about her job as Personal Shopper.
Hi Maria, today we are going to introduce you to Fashion Mentor’s readers. Do you want to tell something about yourself?
My name is Maria and, as I like to describe myself, I am an adopted London with full Italian blood and an addiction to Michael Kors.
Fashion has always been my biggest passion since a young age but it was not until Jan 2016 that I started pursuing a career in it.
Fashion has done a lot for me in the matter of gaining confidence and learning to love myself and the way I looked, and I am now trying to give back helping women and men rediscover their beautiful selves with the good use of fashion.
It’s awesome! when you find a job that is you love, you will never have to work a day in your life, and when you are also able to help people to feel better you have reached the top. As a Fashion Expert, what are the top tips that you can offer to your customer?
My first piece of advice for my clients would be Don’t be afraid of colours because black is not always the best option.
Colours have the power to lift our spirit as well as enhancing our features so that we look healthier and more radiant, so always add a pop of colour to your outfits even if it is just a small accessory, like a neck scarf, a pair of earrings or a tie.
My second piece of advice, which sometimes becomes my first, is Shapewear is our best friend.
As you said, helping customer means allowing them to express their best, but what is your personal style?
Over here in London, a lot of people tell me that my style is very Italian … whatever that means.
I like fashion to be bold but also practical and wearable and I feel Michael Kors is one of those designers who truly combines the two.
I like vibrant colours, I like bold prints, especially animal print, I like Logos and statement earrings.
I don’t follow trends but create my own and I meticulously look for items I know many people won’t go for.
And do you have some favorite pieces for 2019?
Animal Prints! Not just leopard but also snake, crocodile and zebra (all faux leather of course)
Whether it is a small accessory or an Item of clothing to a full-blown outfit, I am wearing a lot of animal prints this year
As you know, Fashion Mentor identify only first-rate Personal Shoppers and Image Consultants. Could you please share to our readers what collaborations have you done previously and which has been your most memorable?
Since graduating at the Casey Paul Styling Academy, I have worked as a retail stylist for well-known brands like Kate Spade, Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent as well as building my own image consulting company which bears my name.
I am also a qualified Fashion Stylist and I am Head Stylist for the London based streetwear brand Jacob’s by OAB.
I have had quite a few amazing moments in my career so far, my first ever catwalk show at LFW, which was Joshua Kane, who is also one of my favourite designers here in the UK, or working backstage at LFW as a dressed for Edeline Lee.
So cool! Part of your job is to stay up to date. What is your main source of inspiration when it comes to staying up to date with the latest fashion trends?
As I said above, I don’t really follow trends.
I have my own individual style and my job as a stylist is to help my clients discover theirs.
How do I keep up-to-date with what is new in fashion? Instagram I think is the main source for many nowadays. Going through fashion magazines online and of course, the fashion weeks.
What’s next for you? Any exciting new projects you are working on?
Body Positivity is a topic very close to my heart and I am planning on hosting classes from October to educate people on this topic as well as providing them with colour and body shape guidelines so that when they go shopping they can make better decisions for themselves and make the whole shopping experience less stressful for them.
I will start with South London and expand in accordance with the demand.
I have also styled my first celebrity client but I am not able to say any more than this until is out in the press.
Maria, thanks for your time. I’ve a last question for you: What does it mean for you to work as a Personal Shopper & Image Consultant?
One in five UK adults feels shame because of their body image and being able to help my clients to overcome that is what my job is all about.
There is no greater satisfaction than the broad smile across a client’s face at the end of a session, after having shared their story with me, giving me their unconditional trust, after loads of laughter, tears and a copious amount of clothes, shoes and accessories.
This is what makes me go to work every day, knowing that in my own way I can contribute to improving someone’s life.
